Your Child Borrows Your Nervous System: How Co-Regulation Shapes Development, Behavior, and Healing
A mom walked into our office one day with her two young boys.
I knew these boys well. They were wonderful kids, but they usually made their presence known the moment they came through the door. They were busy, restless, moving, exploring. Their nervous systems always seemed to arrive before the rest of them did.
But that day was different. They walked in quietly, settled down, and started reading. I remember looking across the room at their mom and asking, “What’s different?”
Without hesitation, she said, “It’s me. I went on a retreat.”
That moment stopped me. Nothing about the boys had intentionally changed. No one had given them instructions to behave differently. Their mom had simply returned home more rested, grounded, and regulated, and somehow her children seemed different too.
It was one of the clearest real-life examples of co-regulation I had ever witnessed.
I had experienced something similar in my own home years before I fully understood what I was seeing. I could walk through the door after an unusually stressful day without saying a word about what had happened, and my son would sometimes become more restless, reactive, or difficult almost immediately.
For a long time, I thought, “How does he know?” Eventually I realized that he did not need me to tell him. His nervous system was paying attention.
Children are constantly taking in information from the people and environments around them. They notice facial expression, posture, movement, breathing, tone of voice, pace, tension, touch, predictability, and countless other cues that most of us never consciously think about. Some children are especially sensitive to those signals.
What we casually describe as a child “picking up on our energy” may actually be something much more fascinating: one nervous system continuously gathering information from another.
That is co-regulation.
Co-Regulation Starts Earlier Than Most Parents Realize
When we think about nervous system development, most people picture a newborn baby learning to sleep, feed, move, smile, and eventually interact with the world. But nervous system development begins long before birth.
The earliest foundations of the brain and spinal cord begin forming within the first few weeks of pregnancy. From there, the nervous system develops at an astonishing pace. Sensory pathways begin forming, primitive reflexes emerge, and autonomic regulation starts developing.
The vagus nerve and other parts of the autonomic nervous system begin contributing to heart rate, digestion, movement, and internal regulation long before a baby takes a first breath. As pregnancy progresses, the fetal brain becomes increasingly capable of receiving and organizing sensory information.
By the third trimester, major pathways connecting deeper brain structures with the developing cortex are becoming much more established. The fetus can respond to sound, movement, touch, changes in maternal physiology, and other signals coming from its environment.
This does not mean a baby in the womb experiences the world exactly the way a newborn or older child does. It means something more important: the developing nervous system is already receiving information and adapting to it.
That is the beginning of regulation.
Pregnancy also gives us our first glimpse of something we will see throughout childhood. A developing nervous system does not mature in isolation. It develops inside an environment.
A Baby Is Born With a Nervous System, But Not a Finished Nervous System
Birth is a massive neurological transition. Within moments, a baby must adapt to light, sound, temperature, gravity, breathing, feeding, movement, touch, and a completely different sensory environment.
And yet many of the brain systems responsible for sophisticated self-regulation are still incredibly immature. This is why newborns rely so heavily on another person. They borrow regulation.
A parent’s warmth helps regulate temperature. Holding and rocking provide movement and vestibular input. Skin-to-skin contact provides touch, smell, rhythm, and familiarity. Feeding helps organize sucking, swallowing, breathing, digestion, and connection. A familiar voice can become a signal of safety, and a caregiver’s breathing, pace, touch, and presence all become part of the baby’s neurological environment.
This is not spoiling a baby. It is development.
Before a child can regulate alone, the nervous system repeatedly experiences regulation with someone else.
Regulation Is Learned From the Bottom Up
This is one of the most important things parents can understand about childhood behavior. Young children do not experience stress and then immediately send it through a fully mature reasoning center. Their nervous systems work from the bottom up.
The body senses something. The brainstem and autonomic nervous system begin organizing a response. Sensory information is filtered. Emotional and survival systems determine whether something feels important, threatening, exciting, unfamiliar, or safe. Only then do the higher parts of the brain become fully involved.
In adults, we often expect the opposite. We tell children to calm down, use their words, think about what they are doing, or remember that they know better. But a young child’s brain may not yet have access to those higher-level tools when the nervous system is overwhelmed.
That is why a child can understand a rule perfectly when regulated and seem to completely lose access to that understanding during a meltdown. The knowledge did not disappear. The nervous system changed states.
The Emotional Brain Develops Before the Rational Brain Is Ready to Lead
The brain systems involved in emotional processing, survival, attachment, reward, memory, and threat detection are incredibly active during early childhood. Meanwhile, the prefrontal cortex, which helps with impulse control, planning, reasoning, perspective, inhibition, and emotional regulation, matures much more slowly.
Brain development continues well into young adulthood.
So when a three-year-old becomes completely overwhelmed because the blue cup is in the dishwasher, adults may see something irrational. Neurologically, however, that child is not operating with an adult brain. The emotional system is powerful, the regulatory system is still developing, and the higher-level reasoning system is nowhere near finished.
This is exactly why co-regulation matters so much. The child is not simply learning rules. The child is learning how it feels to become activated and then return.
Over and over again.
The Goal Is Not to Prevent Stress
A regulated nervous system is not a nervous system that never gets upset.
Stress is part of life. Birth is stressful. Learning to crawl is stressful. Falling down is stressful. Meeting new people, starting school, trying a new food, playing sports, going through puberty, and simply growing up all place demands on the nervous system.
The goal is not to remove every stressor. The goal is to develop the capacity to move through stress and recover.
A healthy nervous system should be able to activate when something matters and then reorganize when the challenge passes. So the more useful question is not, “Did my child get upset?” It is, “Can their nervous system find its way back?”
Co-Regulation Helps Build That Path Back
Imagine a toddler becomes frightened. The nervous system activates, heart rate changes, muscles tighten, breathing shifts, and attention narrows. The child cries and reaches for a parent.
The parent picks them up. The child hears a familiar voice, feels familiar touch, experiences warmth, and feels the rhythm of movement. Over time, the body begins to settle.
This process happens thousands of times during development. Each experience teaches the nervous system that it can become overwhelmed and then come back, that it can experience stress and recover, and that regulation can return after it is lost.
Those repeated experiences become part of how the nervous system learns adaptability.
This is why self-regulation is not simply a skill we teach with words. It is something the nervous system experiences before it can fully reproduce it independently.
Sensitivity Is Not the Same Thing as Dysregulation
Some children notice everything. They notice the tone in someone’s voice, the tension in a room, a change in routine, the hum of a light, a scratchy tag, another child’s distress, their parent’s facial expression, or a sound no one else seems bothered by.
These children are often described as sensitive, emotional, dramatic, intense, anxious, or difficult. But sensitivity itself is not necessarily the problem.
A nervous system that notices subtle changes in the environment can be incredibly perceptive. The difficulty comes when the amount of information being detected exceeds the child’s capacity to organize it.
Sensitivity is the ability to notice. Regulation is the ability to organize what was noticed.
That distinction changes the conversation. Instead of asking, “Why is my child so sensitive?” we might ask, “Why does their nervous system have such a difficult time processing everything it notices?”
When a Parent’s Nervous System Changes, the Environment Changes
This brings us back to the mom who walked into our office after her retreat.
Her children had not suddenly learned a new behavior strategy. She had changed, and because she had changed, part of their neurological environment had changed too.
Maybe her breathing was slower. Maybe her movements were less hurried. Maybe her facial expression was softer. Maybe her tone of voice had changed. Maybe she was more present. Maybe her nervous system was simply sending fewer signals of urgency.
Her boys did not need to consciously analyze any of that. Their nervous systems were already doing the surveying.
This is what makes co-regulation so fascinating. We are constantly communicating far more than words.
This Is Not About Blaming Parents
Parents are human. They have stressful days, lose their patience, get overwhelmed, and carry financial stress, work stress, relationship stress, grief, exhaustion, worry, and responsibilities their children may know nothing about.
The goal is not for a parent to become perfectly calm. That would be impossible.
Children do not need perfect nervous systems around them. They need repeated experiences of recovery. They need to see that stress can happen and regulation can return, that Mom can become frustrated and then reconnect, that Dad can have a difficult day and still settle, and that relationships can experience tension without becoming unsafe.
Sometimes the most powerful form of co-regulation is not avoiding dysregulation. It is demonstrating recovery.
We Never Completely Outgrow Co-Regulation
Adults do this too.
Think about what happens when someone you trust sits beside you during a difficult moment, when you hear the voice of someone who makes you feel safe, when your spouse hugs you after a hard day, or when you walk into a familiar environment and immediately feel yourself settle.
We also regulate through prayer, worship, conversation, family, movement, exercise, rest, routine, connection, and sensory experiences.
Our nervous systems remain social throughout life. The difference is that maturity gives us more regulatory tools.
As children develop, the goal is not to stop needing connection. The goal is to build enough neurological capacity that regulation becomes more flexible.
So When Is the Nervous System Fully Developed?
There is not one single birthday when the nervous system suddenly becomes complete. Development happens in layers.
The brainstem and early survival systems develop first. Sensory and movement systems rapidly organize during infancy and childhood. Emotional and social circuits are heavily shaped through early development, while higher-level executive networks continue maturing through adolescence and into young adulthood.
The prefrontal cortex is among the last major regions to reach mature function.
This means that a five-year-old, ten-year-old, teenager, and twenty-year-old are not simply smaller versions of the same nervous system. They are operating with different levels of neurological maturity.
That should change our expectations.
Sometimes the most helpful question a parent can ask is not, “Why won’t my child do this?” but, “Does their nervous system currently have the capacity to do what I am asking?”
Development Depends on More Than Age
Two children can be the same age and have very different nervous system capacity.
Development is shaped by biology, genetics, pregnancy, birth, movement, sensory experience, sleep, nutrition, illness, relationships, stress, environment, and countless other inputs.
A child’s nervous system may have experienced more demand, less recovery, more sensory load, disrupted sleep, a difficult birth, chronic illness, feeding challenges, developmental stress, or simply a nervous system that processes the world with greater intensity.
This is why we cannot look at behavior alone.
Behavior is what we see. The nervous system is what is organizing the response.
Healing Often Begins With Capacity
A nervous system with very little reserve may struggle to adapt to ordinary demands.
A poor night’s sleep feels bigger. A crowded classroom feels bigger. A transition feels bigger. A sibling conflict feels bigger. A stomachache feels bigger. A change in routine feels bigger.
Not necessarily because the event itself is severe, but because the nervous system has less capacity available to organize it.
This is one of the reasons we talk so much in our office about neurological regulation. We are not simply interested in whether a child looks calm. We are interested in whether the nervous system can appropriately activate, adapt, recover, and build reserve.
Healing requires energy. Growth requires energy. Learning requires energy. Immune function requires energy. Movement requires energy. Emotional regulation requires energy.
When the nervous system is constantly spending its resources managing stress, there may be less reserve available for everything else.
What Do We Do When the Nervous System Is Struggling?
This is where our work becomes very practical.
If a child is having difficulty adapting, recovering, settling, sleeping, tolerating sensory input, or moving through everyday stress, we do not simply look at the behavior and ask how to stop it. We look deeper at the state of the nervous system.
At Purpose Driven Chiropractic, we use neurological scans to help us understand how well the nervous system is regulating and adapting. We look at patterns of autonomic regulation, muscular activity, and stress response because behavior alone does not tell us the full story. Two children can look equally restless on the outside while their nervous systems are operating very differently underneath.
The goal is to identify where the system may be using more energy than it should, where regulation appears inefficient, and whether the child has enough reserve to adapt to the demands being placed on them.
Chiropractic adjustments are one of the tools we use to support that process.
An adjustment provides specific sensory input into the nervous system. That input is received through receptors in the joints, muscles, and surrounding tissues, then carried into the brainstem and other areas of the brain involved in movement, sensory processing, coordination, and autonomic regulation.
The goal is not to force the nervous system into a particular state. It is to improve the quality of neurological information entering the system so the brain can better organize and respond to what it is receiving.
This is why we think about chiropractic care in terms of adaptability rather than simply symptoms.
A better-regulated nervous system may have a greater ability to respond appropriately when demand increases and then recover when the demand passes. That may influence how efficiently a child handles sensory input, movement, emotional stress, sleep, transitions, immune challenges, learning demands, and everyday life.
And just like co-regulation, this process is not about one perfect moment.
The nervous system learns through repetition.
One adjustment can create neurological input, but lasting change depends on repeated experiences that allow the brain and body to recognize, reinforce, and stabilize healthier patterns. This is one of the reasons care plans are built around consistency rather than isolated visits.
We are trying to give the nervous system repeated opportunities to organize differently.
That same principle is happening at home through co-regulation. A child does not learn regulation because a parent helped them settle one time. They learn it through thousands of repeated experiences of activation, support, recovery, movement, connection, and safety.
In many ways, that is the common thread between what happens in the office and what happens at home.
We are helping create better conditions for the nervous system to adapt. Parents are helping create better conditions for the nervous system to experience connection and recovery.
Neither one is about forcing calm. Both are about building capacity.
Why We Often Encourage Parents to Be Checked Too
Because nervous systems influence one another, we often encourage parents to consider care alongside their children.
This is not because a parent has to be perfectly regulated before a child can improve. It is because the parent is part of the child’s neurological environment every day.
If Mom or Dad is carrying an enormous amount of neurological stress, struggling to recover, sleeping poorly, feeling constantly on edge, or simply running on very little reserve, that affects their own health first. But it can also influence the pace, tone, predictability, and overall sensory environment of the home.
When parents begin building more capacity in their own nervous systems, they often notice changes in themselves first. They may recover more quickly after stressful days, feel less reactive, sleep better, or simply feel more present.
And when the parent’s nervous system changes, the environment around the child changes too.
That office story with the two boys is such a simple example. Their mom did not come back from her retreat with a new parenting technique. She came back different, and the children appeared to respond to that difference almost immediately.
This is why family care can be so valuable.
We are not only looking at one child in isolation. We are looking at the nervous systems that live, work, recover, and grow together.
Parents Are Part of the Neurological Environment Too
Chiropractic care is only one part of the bigger picture.
Sleep matters. Movement matters. Nutrition matters. Time outside matters. Sensory load matters. Predictability matters. Connection matters. Recovery matters. And yes, the state of the parent’s own nervous system matters too.
Sometimes the most meaningful changes are surprisingly simple: more sleep, less rushing, more movement, fewer competing demands, more connection, clearer routines, time outdoors, and moments where the nervous system is allowed to settle without constant stimulation.
The goal is not to create a stress-free life.
The goal is to create a nervous system with enough capacity to handle life.
The Question Changes
Once we understand co-regulation, we begin looking at children differently.
Instead of asking, “What is wrong with this behavior?” we start asking, “What is this nervous system responding to?”
Instead of asking, “Why is my child so sensitive?” we ask, “How much information is their nervous system trying to process?”
Instead of asking, “Why can’t they calm down?” we ask, “Do they currently have access to regulation?”
And instead of asking, “How do I stop this reaction?” we ask, “How do we help this nervous system build greater capacity?”
That is a fundamentally different way of understanding children, and often a much more useful one.
Your Child Is Learning Regulation Through Relationship
From pregnancy through childhood and far beyond, nervous systems are constantly communicating.
We influence one another, read one another, and respond to one another. For a developing child, those experiences help shape the pathways that eventually support independent regulation.
Your child does not need you to be calm every second. They do not need a stress-free childhood, and they do not need every difficult emotion removed.
They need opportunities to experience stress inside enough safety that their nervous system can learn what recovery feels like, again and again.
Because eventually, the nervous system begins to recognize the path home.
And that may be one of the most important things co-regulation gives a developing child: the repeated neurological experience that stress does not have to be permanent, overwhelm does not have to become the baseline, and regulation can return.
